Keep It Simple

Symphony of Contentment

  1. TO LIVE CONTENT with small means.

  2. TO SEEK ELEGANCE rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion.

  3. TO BE WORTHY, not respectable and wealthy, not rich.

  4. TO STUDY HARD, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly.

  5. TO LISTEN TO STARS and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart.

  6. TO BEAR ALL, cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never.

  7. IN A WORD, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common.

This is to be my symphony.

How to Get Ahead at Work

When we sign a contract with an employer, it is critical that we realize that we are in control of our destiny and our career with that company. Here are some things you can do to insure that you earn the promotions you want.

  1. Do the best job you can.
Part of being the best you can be is doing the best job you can. To get promoted, it's not enough to show up for work. Whatever we have been hired to do, we must do to our very best ability. The better you do your job, the more likely it is that your efforts will be noticed and that you'll be considered for bigger and better responsibilities. This step is absolutely critical for getting ahead.

  2. Respect authority.
Whether you respect the person in the position, always show respect for the position. This is especially true when that person decides whether or not you'll get promoted. I believe that people have to earn respect, but it always make sense to respect the position. Even if we question their ability or how they got there, their position is vital to the success of the company. Because of that, it is just common sense to treat the person in it with respect.

  3. Assume management is doing the best they can.
It may be hard to believe some days, but the management is actually doing the best they can. They have the interests of the company and their employees at heart. However, unfortunately to some degree, they must often put the needs of the business before the needs of the individual employees. It only makes sense, and trust me when I say, that you would most like make the same decision if that were your responsibility. Also, assuming the best of management makes for a better relationship for you and the powers that be.

  4. Assume management is not trying to screw you.
If you are someone who believes that other people are in control of your life, then it is very possible that you believe management has your name on a voodoo doll in the backroom and all their decisions are made to screw you over. Nothing could be further from the truth (at least in 99.9% of the cases). Take responsibility for your life and your career. If you are not getting promoted, start by looking at your actions. Would you promote you, based on the quality and quantity of work you do, and the level of maturity you show on the job? One of my favorite Jim Rohn quotes is "You don't get paid for the hour. You get paid for the value you bring to the hour." This is something to remember always.

  5. Support the company's mission statement and operating principles.
Most companies, big and small, have outlined their mission and operating principles. Get a copy of yours and follow the guidelines as presented on these documents. Supporting these documents and becoming a true member of the team, by looking out for the best interests of the company as well as yourself (and don't forget to do both!) is a great way to be noticed by management.

You'll be surprised how taking responsibility at work will make a change in your confidence level and will permeate into all other areas of your life.

Working Towards Wholeness: Action Step

[For me, wholeness represents being my best self living my best life. I believe there are 13 keys to living in wholeness (5 Steps, 8 Elements). Each newsletter, I will look at one action step you can take so that you may get one step closer to wholeness]

WHOLENESS KEY: Focus on the Elements
ELEMENT: Positive Self Regard
ACTION STEP: Ten Simple Ways to Be Kind to Yourself (by Ruth Hegarty)

Positive self regard is a combination of self-esteem, self-love, and self-care. Without a positive, balanced and healthy self-regard, it appears to be impossible to maximize the opportunities available when reserves of the other 7 elements are present. This issue's action step to wholeness is also our guest article by Ruth Hegarty, 10 Simple Ways to be Kind to Yourself. There is an integral relationship between positive self regard and being kind to yourself. Try one of Ruth's suggestions a week and let me know what a difference it makes in your journey to wholeness.

You are entitled to as much kindness as you can bestow upon yourself. Here are ten simple places to begin.

1. Take good care of your body, it's the only one you will every have. Eat well, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, etc. If you don't know how to take good care of your body, consult your doctor, a nutritionist, a personal trainer, and/or a coach for help. Rule of thumb: when in doubt do what you will still feel good about tomorrow - that means forgo that second helping of ice cream! Good luck!

2. Take time to smell the roses. Appreciate the little things in life as well as the big. It may sound cliched, however, being mindful of the small joys of life will elevate your mood, reduce stress, and over time will reorient your whole attitude to a more positive outlook. So, find at least one thing each day to be happy about. As an added bonus, this practice will save you money too!

3. Keep telling yourself that you are as important as anyone else is until you truly believe it. If you already believe it, still say it!

4. Examine your feelings when you feel inferior or inadequate. Everyone has these feelings sometimes. Understanding why you sometimes feel this way will help you to know what changes you need to make in your life and attitude to change these feelings. Being aware of your emotional ups and downs and recognizing these are natural and generally transitory feelings, helps you to cut yourself some slack. If these feelings persist, get stronger, or you feel depressed consult a doctor or therapist.

5. Remember, it is perfectly natural not to be perfect all of the time. More than that, it is perfectly acceptable not to be perfect all of the time. If you put your best efforts forward, you have not failed.

6. Know your limitations and ask for assistance before you become overwhelmed. Strength comes from knowing when you need help and having the courage to ask for it. Surround yourself with a network of people whom you trust to support you and who can count on you in return.

7. Give yourself credit for a job well done. Celebrate successes even when they seem small. One hundred little successes are a very big deal. Think of all the fun you will have celebrating 100 times!

8. Don't rush. We live in a busy world and it is easy to get caught up in the busyness around us. Give yourself peace of mind by "padding" your schedule. Leave yourself more time to complete tasks, arrive at a meeting and prepare for a presentation than you think you will need. Rule of thumb: Decide how much time you will need and double it; triple it if it is something you've never done before or aren't sure of.

9. Cultivate your sense of humor. It's pretty difficult to feel down while you're laughing.

10. Take time every day to do the things you enjoy. Life is too short to live any other way!
