Keep It Simple

6 Principles to Use in Reducing the Clutter in Your Life

Adapted from The Complete Idiot's Guide to Simple Living by Georgene Lockwood. .

Last issue we looked Georgene's 10 Laws of Stuff. This issue is focused on some principles that will help you decide what is of value and what needs to go.

  1. Quality, Not Quantity
Instead of six knives that won't hold an edge and feel funny in your hand, have one superb knife that sharpens like a dream and feels like it was made for you.

  2. Abundance, not Excess
Paring down and living simply doesn't mean being poor. The simple life is abundant: you have everything you truly need and the time to satisfy your true, inner wants. This isn't deprivation! This is true abundance. Excess, clutter and useless stuff are the true deprivers.

  3. The Less You Have, the Less You Have to Organize
It's true. The more gadgets and gizmos we have, the more we have to deal with. It means storing it, stacking it, moving it out of the way to get to something else, cleaning it, packing it when we move, and just plain handling it.

  4. Multi-Use, Not Single Use
Whenever possible, don't buy a tool or appliance that only does one thing. For example, a food processor is a multi-use appliance. However, if you only use it a few times a year, it loses it's multi-use value.

  5. Stop it at the Source!
Don't take that brochure or flier! Don't bring home that souvenir! Get off those mailing lists! Don't buy any more stuff you don't need! If you stop it at the source, the stuff never has to be handled because it didn't find its way past your front door.

  6. Is it Worth Your Essence?
When you are thinking of buying something, ask yourself this question: "Is it worth my essence?" (And ask the same question for others you are planning to gift in some way: "Is this worth their essence?") By essence, we mean the energy it takes to store, clean, handle it. If the answer is no, leave it at the store.

  7. Quick Start Tip
Challenge yourself to see how much you can reduce clutter in just 15 minutes. While you're waiting for the coffee to brew, clean off a counter. While you're on hold, sort some papers. Throw out most of them and file the rest. There is a lot of power in just 15 minutes.

10 Rules of Success for Kids

We usually think of self development and personal growth as activities we start in our thirties. While that's probably true for several generations of people, there is no reason that kids can't focus on becoming the very best kid they can be. As parents, here are some basic lessons you can teach your child that will stand them well for years to come.

  1. Go to bed early.
Renewing and regenerating your body is a life-long necessity. It's one of the best habits to get into. Go to bed early, even if you read for a bit in order to wind down. 8 hours is the average most people need, but listen to your own body to figure out your own optimal amount of sleep.

  2. Eat varied foods.
The more variety you put into your diet, the more you'll enjoy life. Opening yourself to new foods will allow you to be willing to experience many other things in life. You might not like everything you try, but it's the open-ness to new experiences that will be the lifelong benefit.

  3. Make friends with soap and water.
There's an old proverb that says "Cleanliness is next to Godliness". Learning to enjoy being neat and clean will serve you well, especially as you mature and get interested in the opposite sex. But long before you get there, staying clean (Or rather, getting clean after getting dirty, since it's important to get dirty as a kid. In fact it's your job!) will help you establish and maintain a good relationship with your parents. Trust me, they really don't want to spend all their quality time with you trying to get you to clean yourself or your room.

  4. Build, take apart, explore.
The other primary job a kid has is to find out how the world ticks. You may need to remind your parents the goal isn't to break things, but to figure out how it works. Those building and taking apart activities will teach you how to learn, another lifelong advantage.

  5. Talk to Mom and Dad.
Establishing a healthy relationship with your parents early on in life will ensure that you've always got allies. You'll be surprised at how opening up with them and being willing to share what's going on in your life will make a difference in your self esteem. 99% of all parents who constantly question and nag their kids feel out of the picture and have no clue what their kids are doing. They just want to know your safe. Start sharing with them and you'll be surprised how differently they treat you.

  6. Enjoy your family and friends.
When we're kids, it is sometimes hard to believe that the other kids in your house can become your best friends. The sooner you start to enjoy that relationship, the happier you'll be. Surprise the heck out of your siblings and give them a big hug!

  7. Don't stop asking why.
That early inquisitiveness will serve you well throughout life. Remember that it's healthy to question things. So even when your parents are tired of it, don't stop asking why! It's only fair that decisions be explained to you in terms you understand.

  8. Smile often.
This is such a simple rule of success that we sometimes overlook it. Stand in front of the mirror and change your facial expression. Try being angry, sad, pouting and afraid. Then smile and take a good look at yourself. Which face do you think makes you more attractive? Which face is the one you want to spend more time with? So, show those pearly whites often!

  9. Be a good friend, son, brother or sister.
Establishing good relationships with your individual family members is a critical responsibility of being a friend, son, brother or sister. It's also important to become aware of the fact that it IS your responsibility to develop good relationships. If you are having problems with any of your primary relationships, ask yourself what YOU can do to make it better. Don't wait and put it in the other person's court. It's in yours, so play it!

  10. Learn the most important words you'll ever use.
Hard as it may be to believe, you can have a successful life if you use the following words liberally: "Please. Thank You. I love You." Get this one right and you might able to slide on some of the others!

Always Be Growing - Mind Candy
by Elaine Love

We all know that what we feed our body, determines our health, our weight and our energy. How much attention are you giving to your mind? What diet are you feeding your mind?

Are you listening and watching the electronic income reducer - TV? How many of those programs actually pick up your spirits and stretch your imagination in a positive direction? If you watch Constantly Negative News, CNN, you generally find depressing news followed by a commercial for an anti-depressant, followed by more negative news and followed by another commercial for another anti-depressant. See a pattern here?

If you continue to feed your body unhealthy food, you will have health problems. The same goes for your mind. If you feed your mind a diet of depression and violence, how can you possibly expect a happy, upbeat outlook on life?

Fill your mind with mental nutrients, especially first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. You subconscious mind is the most receptive when you are just coming out of an alpha state (sleep) and just before you drift into an alpha state. The last thing in your mind before sleep and the first thoughts into your mind when you awake are the most important. Use these times to program your subconscious mind with what you truly desire to achieve.

Avoid television, especially violence or depressing news at least an hour before sleep. Personally, I do not watch television. I prefer to read at least 10 pages of a really good book the last thing before I go to sleep. The first thing on awakening, I like to read positive affirmations. It sets the tone for the day. The next activity is always my treadmill. I listen to inspirational or educational CD's during that time. It not only makes the time go faster but it fills my mind with uplifting and mind stretching thoughts prior to starting my work day. Periodically throughout the day, I repeat the positive affirmations.

I have not listened to regular radio stations in my car. I prefer educational or inspirational CD's in my car as well. Even a traffic jam is more tolerable with something soothing and pleasantly stimulating.

What we think about, we bring about. I prefer encouraging and enlightening thoughts and events. How about you? What are you feeding your mind on a daily basis?

Working Towards Wholeness: Action Step

[For me, wholeness represents being my best self living my best life. I believe there are 13 keys to living in wholeness (5 Steps, 8 Elements). Each newsletter, I will look at one action step you can take so that you may get one step closer to wholeness]

WHOLENESS KEY: Focus on the Elements
ELEMENT: Strong Sense of Self
ACTION STEP: Identify your Vision, Mission and Life Purpose.

To develop a strong sense of self, it is critical to identify your vision and your mission in life, as well as your life purpose. Many people use the terms vision and mission or mission and purpose interchangeably. However, they are actually three different things. The following is a summary of those differences.

  1. YOUR VISION STATEMENT
    • graphically describes how you visualize your ideal world.
    • is big.. bigger than you could possible achieve alone.
    • captures your passion!
    • is expansive and idealistic.
  2. YOUR MISSION STATEMENT
    • reflects your passion and describes why you exist.
    • describes the role you play in making your vision come true.
    • answers the questions: who will I serve, how will I serve them, and why will I serve them.
    • is short, powerful, and memorable.
  3. YOUR LIFE PURPOSE
  1. HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR VISION

    • Start with a clean piece of paper. At the top of the page, write the following: MY VISION.
    • Complete the following statement: In my ideal world, everyone on the planet __________.
    • Many different thoughts may come up, or it may be crystal clear in the beginning. Tweak it until you're certain that this sentence accurately describes your vision of the ideal world.

  2. HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR MISSION

    • Draw a line under your vision, leave a space and write the following: MY MISSION.
    • Complete the following statement: In order to make my ideal world a reality, my role in making that vision a realy, my mission, is to ____________________________ .
    • Many different thoughts may come up, or it may be crystal clear in the beginning. Tweak it until you're certain that this sentence accurately describes your mission to create your ideal world.

  3. HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR LIFE PURPOSE

  4. Samples (MY) Vision, Mission, and Purpose
    • My vision: is to have everyone on the planet live their lives to their fullest potential and to have everything in their lives be their number one choice.
    • My mission: is to provide the guidance, tools and support that individuals need to connect and stay connected to their own inner wisdom, strength and power, allowing them to live life grounded in their values, and enabling them to turn all their dreams into reality. I help people live their best lives!
    • My life purpose: is to create order out of chaos.
