Food for Thought

"Put your whole self into it, and you will find your true voice. Hold back and you won't. It's that simple. " --- Hugh Macleod

Keep It Simple

The 10 Laws of Stuff

Adapted from The Complete Idiot's Guide to Simple Living by Georgene Lockwood. .

  1. Stuff breeds. (The more you have, the more you need.)
  2. The useless stuff crowds out the good stuff. (When you have a lot of stuff you don't need, you cant locate the good stuff!)
  3. Dust, bugs, rodents and moisture all love stuff. (And once they get at it, the stuff becomes 'junk'.)
  4. Stuff tends to stay where it lands. (Anything we put down without a clear decision of what we want to do with it will stay where you put it until you have 'time' to think about.)
  5. Stuff expands to fit the space available. (We tend to be afraid of open spaces, I believe because it makes US feel empty. Look for the space to grow and be free.)
  6. Over time, stuff becomes invisible. (How sad, yet how true! I can't tell you how often I've spent time looking for something that, the minute I give up and go back to what I was doing, the item appears miraculously in my line of sight!)
  7. Stuff costs you money more than once. (In addition to the money to buy the stuff, it takes time and money to deal with it, insure it, clean it, maintain it and store it!)
  8. Stuff has a powerful effect on your state of mind. (Useless stuff is a burden that weighs us don, leaving us irritable and depressed. Less stuff means less stress!)
  9. Stuff takes on value only when it's used. (The more often you use something, the more value it has. The less often you use something the less valuable that item becomes to you. Pass it on to someone who will value it!)
  10. Stuff doesn't make you happy, you do! (Your personal value is not determined by how much stuff you have, despite what millions of people think. Your value comes from inside you and you express that to the world.)

8 Things to Enjoy at Any Age

No matter how old we are, there are several things that we get to enjoy. It is this enjoyment that is the key to a happy life. If you can appreciate the following, you'll be set for life!

  1. Each Sunrise
Whether its sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy, extremely hot or extremely cold, every morning that we wake up and can be grateful for another day is a good day! These mornings become sweeter as we grow older, and therefore probably elicit more appreciation.

  2. Beautiful weather
Over and beyond being grateful for waking up this morning, the weather outside is something to enjoy. Interestingly enough, it's not necessary for the day to be sunny, with blue skies and a nice little breeze to be beautiful. In fact, when everyday is sunny, it gets kind of boring. Having lived in New England for 30 years, I know the truth of "If you don't like the weather here, just wait 10 minutes and it will change". To me, that's the most perfect weather of all, when it changes frequently and I get to experience a ton of different atmospheric conditions.

  3. Family
While we might not always enjoy our family when we are younger, most adults enjoy their family relationships. Whether it's our birth family or our own family, there are many experiences we can share only with those closest to us. To paraphrase an old proverb, "No man is a hero to his family". This is an added benefit as we can 'be ourselves' with family as we can't be with anyone else.

  4. Good people/friends
Most of us have communities of varying sizes. Because it is a personal preference, it may be one or two very close friends up to large numbers of groups we surround ourselves with. It all depends on where we feel comfortable. The important thing is to enjoy whatever relationships we have. If we don't, the best gift we can give ourselves is to let go of non-productive or constantly negative relationships.

  5. Sense of humor
A sense of humor is something we all have, although there is quite a range in exactly what that means to each of us. Again, the important thing is to have opportunities to laugh, chuckle, howl, grin or smile on a regular basis.

  6. A deep relationship with God
Our spiritual life is an important piece of our daily enjoyment. Again, I don't believe there is a 'right' religion or spiritual practice, as long as you have some deep bond with a source bigger and/or greater than yourself.

  7. The drama of life
Being able to take several steps back and look at life as an uninterested bystander has its perks. Seeing the big picture allows one to realize how human nature works and to notice repeatable patterns. It's another great way to stand back and enjoy the drama that we call life.

  8. Good health
As many say, "without your health, you have nothing". Do what you need to do so that you can enjoy your life with the energy and vitality that keeps it that way!

Manifesting Lesson: Dealing With A Super Busy Life
by Maria Meiners

One of the complaints of modern day living is that life is just so dang busy! And while some people thrive on this kind of lifestyle, others find themselves drained, overwhelmed and frustrated by it all.

So what can you do about it? Manifesting with the Law of Attraction gives you a way to manage the busyness of life in a way that energizes, rather than drains you.

You start out by intending life the way you want it. That's right - tell the Universe that you intend to live a happy, stress free life no matter how busy you are. This alone will help a lot.

In addition to that, you can intend specific things that will bring more flow and peace to your day, even if they are really busy. By this I don't mean ask for less to do or more hours in the day. These requests are just trying to manage chaos. We want to eliminate chaos, right?

So instead how about intending things like:

Intending these types of things will eliminate a lot of stress so you can relax and enjoy life instead of rushing through it all frazzled. And after you've stated your intentions and placed your order with the Universe simply get on with your day, doing what you have to do. In no time you'll realize that you're getting even more done than before, with less effort and stress and with more joy. Way to go!

Maria Meiners is known as the "Manifesting Muse," and helps ordinary people learn to Manifest using Law of Attraction principles. If you're new to manifesting, or frustrated because it doesn't seem to be working in your life then Maria can help you get real, measurable results starting today! Ready to get started? Working Towards Wholeness: Action Step

[For me, wholeness represents being my best self living my best life. I believe there are 13 keys to living in wholeness (5 Steps, 8 Elements). Each newsletter, I will look at one action step you can take so that you may get one step closer to wholeness]

WHOLENESS KEY: Focus on the Elements
ELEMENT: Strong Sense of Self
ACTION STEP: Understanding the Personal Mission Statement

Some people I work with don't appreciate the value of creating their own mission statement, an essential element for a 'strong self of self'. In his book, What Matters Most: The Power of Living Your Values, Hyrum W. Smith, founder of Franklin Quest Co. and co-founder of FranklinCovey, helps identify exactly what a personal mission statement is and how it can impact your life.
