Keep It Simple

Put Space in Your Schedule

  1. Stop.
Take a little time every day to think --- not just about what you're doing, but also why you're doing it.

  2. Prepare.
Prepare for the wrecks of life. Even when things go wrong, planning ahead can help us pick up the pieces and keep moving forward.

  3. Adjust your attitude.
Focus on the good in a situation.

  4. Concentrate.
You must discern what your gifts are and what they are not. Say yes to the best, and don't rise up to everything others want you to do.

  5. Energize.
Engage in energy-renewing activities. The difference between space and stress is the difference between your limit and your load. If your load and limit are the same, you need to work on the limit, because sometimes you can't do much about the load.

5 Myths About Your Life Purpose

It is hard to work on becoming your best self without contemplating your life purpose. Many of us have a sense of that purpose and feel compelled to live it as much as possible. However, there is quite a contingent of people who are overwhelmed by the process and who have some incorrect beliefs about our life purpose. Here are some of those myths debunked!

  1. Life Purpose always involves service to thousands
While there is no question that there are the Mother Theresa's, Wayne Dyers, Steven Coveys, Deepok Chopras (to name just a tiny subset of people with life purposes that span and impact the globe) for most of us, the audience is much smaller. In fact, we may discover that our life purpose is directed at only 1, 2 or a handful of people, perhaps our children or immediate family. Don't allow the potential scope of your life purpose to stop you from identifying it! Who do you want to be a role model for? That is your target audience.

  2. We have no choice about our life purpose.
Occasionally I run into people who think they have identified their life purpose, but don't like it. In my experience, we spend our lives preparing to effectively fulfill the 'responsibilities' of our life purpose and so if you find you don't like what you perceive as your life purpose, i don't believe it IS your life purpose. Let's say that you notice that your have a history of working with handicapped individuals, but really resent the duties involved. You can choose not to do the specific things you don't like. However, I implore you to look at the situation with new eyes. Perhaps it's not about being a caretaker of individuals with handicaps, but to fight for justice and equalities for those individuals. If you don't feel in love with the idea, then say no to it and go back to the drawing board. You may have the right subset of people but the wrong action identified.

  3. It's not really a life purpose if we don't know what it is.
Many people have a longing to determine their life purpose. What people don't get is that whether we know exactly what it is, most of us are living out their life purpose. The whole point of a life purpose, in my opinion, is something we are drawn to, something that makes us feel we give to others, something we find joy in expressing. Even if we have never put words to it, if you stop and look around, paying attention to things you enjoy doing that really give you joy, you will soon discover that in fact, you do know your life purpose and are already living it. The important piece here is to do things that bring you joy and impact others.

  4. Life Purpose means a major change in our life.
I believe that the experiences and life lessons of the first half of our life are intended as preparation for effectively and efficiently living our life purpose. Because of that, and because we tend to live it even when we can not articulate it, it is very unlikely that we have to get on a plane and move to some far-flung part of the globe. There are people already there whose life purpose it is to serve those segments of the population. Sometimes it is necessary to look at what we want to do for a group of people as opposed to the group of people. Our purpose is an action and making that distinction may get you on the right track. What can you do right where you are that involves that activity?

  5. Living our life purpose will take over our lives.
This may be true for some (Mother Theresa is a good example here as well), however, for most of us, living our life purpose is a part of the fabric of our life which must include all our roles: employee, employer, child, spouse, parent, just to name a few. There is a 'right' balance for integrating life purpose into your life that works for you 100%. Don't be afraid to experiment with the time commitment. Try a little more, a little less, until you find the amount of time that allows you to feel joy in the expression of your life purpose. If it is creating overwhelm for you, it's necessary to do this as quickly as you become aware of it.

Working Towards Wholeness: Action Step

[For me, wholeness represents being my best self living my best life. I believe there are 13 keys to living in wholeness (5 Steps, 8 Elements). Each newsletter, I will look at one action step you can take so that you may get one step closer to wholeness]

WHOLENESS KEY: Focus on the Elements
ELEMENT: Positive Self Regard
ACTION STEP: Reasons to feel good about yourself.

Definition of Positive Self Regard
This is a combination of self-esteem, self-love, and self-care. Without a positive, balanced and healthy self-regard, it appears to be impossible to maximize the opportunities available when reserves of the other 7 elements are present.

This exercise is separated into 3 different lists and is designed to help build your personal positive regard. Take your time creating these lists. They are a very important tool in becoming your best self.

  1. Take 3 pieces of paper and put the following titles, 1 per page.
  2. Take as long as you need to identify all the reasons. Feel free to go over 20, but do 20 as a minimum. Additionally, flush out each reason. Paragraphs would be good here to help you connect to the emotion that links to the reason.
  3. Read each of your lists daily. Remember to take some deep breaths while reading and to 'feel' each quality. Start being proud of and enjoying yourself!
