The 3-Minute Coach

From Manager to Coach

Welcome to The 3-Minute Coach

For a variety of reasons, it's been a while since the last newsletter. I really appreciate all who wrote to me to find out what was going on and tell me the newsletter was missed. I also appreciate all those who tried to subscribe again, thinking they had been dropped off the list. Your encouragement has meant a lot to me and given me the energy to get back on the horse.

From the bottom of my heart, in joy, peace and gratitude,

Louise

Keep It Simple

Be Proactive about Eliminating 'Incoming' Junk

There are a number of approaches to cutting down the stress evoked by unwanted mail, email, calls and faxes. One is to be ready with the delete button, but I believe that should be the final step. Here are some suggestions for getting rid of unsolicited offers. Most of these offers are for the US, but I suspect similar efforts are available in other countries as well.

JUNK MAIL: Send a postcard to the Mail Preference Service, PO Box 282, Carmel, NY 10512 and ask to have your name removed from junk mail lists. Alternately, you can visit the Direct Marketing Associates site and fill out a form online. You can submit it online for $5 or print it out and mail it in for free.

JUNK E-MAIL: A similar service is offered by the Direct Marketing Association for email. Note that the email provider must use their service to clean their lists, but every little bit helps. Try the DMA Email site. Also, pay attention when you sign up for a service or register anything online. Most companies now allow you to un-check the box that says something like "Receive email offers from this company." Additionally, I know that there is a school of thought that says don't try to get off a mailing list because that will confirm your email as valid and you will get more. I believe that at least 90% of people who send emails would rather send to people who are really interested. I try to opt out of things using the instructions within the email. This does work most of the time. When it doesn't, I create a filter to immediately delete mail from that person when it comes in.

PRESCREENED CREDIT CARD/INSURANCE OFFERS: You can remove your name from prescreened credit or insurance offer mailing lists from Experian, Innovis, TransUnion and Equifax, by calling 1-888-5OPT-OUT (1-888-567-8688). You will be given a choice to opt out for two years or permanently. If you elect to opt out permanently, you will be mailed a Notice of Election to Opt Out Permanently, which you must sign and return to activate your permanent opt out.

FAX: Several years ago, we gave our home number to a travel agent to fax our itinerary to us. Within several months we were receiving about 5 unsolicited faxes a day (and worse, night! It seems a lot of companies wait to do their auto-faxing until the middle of the night.) On each fax, there was an 800 number on the bottom. I believe that I ended up calling 3 altogether, but we no longer receive unsolicited faxes.

PHONE: You can't stop your phone today, but you can start the process for the future. Every time you do business with someone by phone, ask that your name and number not be forwarded or sold to other organizations. This is also true for telemarketers. Ask that your name be taken off their list. It may take a while, but I have found that certain companies have stopped calling to make additional offers by my asking them not to! Be specific - don't just say you're not interested, ask the company to put you on its "Do Not Call" list. The DMA also has a site for phone calls.

Hope you find this information helpful. By taking some time to act proactively and stopping unsolicited offers before they get to you, you free up a lot of energy you used to use in dealing with this stuff. Additionally, you have taken control of the process and that adds to your self esteem and confidence.

Top 10 Ways to Move from Manager to Coach

  1. Stop thinking of people in your organization as employees. Think of them as associates. Associates are people you work in partnership with. Employees are people you tell what to do.
  2. Relate to the whole person.
  3. Never walk by someone without acknowledging them. A smile, a nod, a 'good morning' - these small acknowledgments go a long way.
  4. Don't expect anyone to do anything you're not willing or able to do. Be a role-model. You don't need to do their work, but you must be committed to doing your work as thoroughly and error-free as you expect of others.
  5. Don't ever talk about one associate with another. Period.
  6. When you do need to give negative feedback, talk about the behavior, not the person.
  7. Respect and acknowledge the contribution that each and every person brings to the table.
  8. Understand that your reports are your number one customers. How can you help them do their job better?
  9. Don't allow anyone to undermine the success of your operation. If you have a weak link, either turn it around or get rid of it. Don't tolerate anything but the best from your associates.
  10. Focus on the staff AND the work, not one or the other. Help the people develop all of their skills. Invest in your associates for the short and long term.

Principles of Attraction

Attraction is the ability to consistently draw the best things in life towards you: opportunities, strong finances, rewarding relationships, whatever you define as 'the best things'. Additionally, it means to draw them forth effortlessly, without striving, scuffling or struggling.

Thomas J. Leonard has developed 28 Principles of Attraction in his book "The Portable Coach". (Visit Amazon.Com) .

Each newsletter I will take one principle and highlight its key points. For a pdf version of all 28 principles, email attraction04@touchpointcoaching.com .

I have created a page out on the website that takes all of the Principles, with the clarification and key points I have written for each of them. It will always be updated up til the last newsletter! That is, Principles 1-12 are there now, #13 will be added before the next newsletter. You can see it here: Atraction Plus!

Principle #14: THRIVE ON THE DETAILS
Subtleties, details and nuances are more attractive than the obvious.

CLARIFICATION

Novelists and film directors like to say "God is in the details". That's the essence of this principle. It means the more you start paying attention to the details of a project (or your life), the sooner you'll be able to do something profound with it. Using other terminology, it means that using a micro (small details) approach generates macro (whole system) benefits.

This isn't about becoming lost and obsessed with the details. It's about seeing the links between small details and big movements and understanding that this small detail or action leads to success and in fact, success can't happen without this small detail or action happening.

KEY POINTS

  1. "Think globally, act locally". Let the big picture or macro view inspire you to get the small or micro (read boring or 'unimportant') pieces done. According to Thomas, his magic formula would be 50% micro, 48% system and 2% big picture. Pay just enough attention to macro/big picture so that you understand what details need improving or tweaking and what systems need to be installed to improve those details. The biggest differences emerge from making lots of little differences.

  2. Details usually occur in the present. When you stay in the present, you notice the details and, more importantly, can respond to them while they're still small!

  3. Sometimes we get overwhelmed when we look at the 'big problem' or get lost trying to fix the 'whole thing'. When that happens we lose focus and typically do nothing to fix any part of the problem. Most big problems are made up of many small problems. Identify the individual problems and remember the Pareto principle. 80% of our difficulties come from 20% of the problems. Fix the 20% and then re-evaluate. It could possibly take care of the situation completely or allow everyday problems to disappear so that you have time to address revamping of an entire system.

  4. Details are a great place to exercise another attraction principle: over-responding. They're small, understandable, easily responded to and usually generate immediate feedback. The next time you're surprised by even a slight change in something, over-respond and see what happens.

  5. You'll know you're making progress in this area when you begin to enjoy the details, because you can learn from and leverage them.
