Keep It Simple

The Same Wavelength

Over the years, I have often used the phrase "being on the same wavelength" to indicate when I felt complete rapport with someone. Even if we didn't agree 100% on the topic at hand, these encounters usually meant that I felt heard and I was very clear that the other person felt heard as well. In fact, we had a dialogue, and not two monologues, as often passes for conversation!

Instead of these being happy, but totally uncontrolled events, individuals who work with energy - as well as smart leaders and great parents - are aware of the fact that our language can be used to identify which of the senses we rely on most. When we are both talking from the same sense, there is a stronger impression of understanding and communication.

There are three main styles. We all use all three of them, but there is one that is dominant for each of us. Here are some examples of verbal language:

Visual:
"I see what you mean." "I get the picture." "My point of view." "I take a dim view of." "Here I am!"

Auditory:
"I hear what you're saying." "We're on the same wavelength." "Speak your mind!" "What do you say to."

Kinesthetic (Touch)
"I get the feeling that." "You put your finger on it." "Hold on a moment!" "Let's get to grips with this." "Feels strange to me."

It doesn't just impact conversation, but how we learn. Auditory people learn best the traditional way (classroom learning where you listen to the teacher); Visual individuals like to have it shown to them; and Kinesthetic people need a real hands-on approach. The Visual people are also broken down into two groups: the Visual/Verbal, who prefer to read information and the Visual/Non-Verbal, who prefer graphs and charts.

If you are a public speaker or teacher, or in any role where you interact with a lot of people, you will want to throw some statements from each style in to ensure that everyone in the room hears what you say.

Honor Your Creativity

Many years ago, I saw a movie entitled "The Last of Sheila", starring James Coburn, Dyan Cannon, James Mason, to name just a few. I love mysteries and I still remember this as one of the best I've ever seen. It wasn't just the overall mystery, but the individual puzzles were finely crafted and quite ingenious.

What really struck me about this movie, however, is the fact that it was written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins.

Sondheim is a composer, most famous for the score to 'West Side Story'. Anthony Perkins was an actor, most famous for his role in 'Psycho'. It seemed to me that these two were very lucky. Not only were they creative to the point of celebrity in one area, here they were exhibiting genius in a whole other arena.

I was also awed this past April on a trip to San Francisco. Across the street from our hotel was an art gallery that was displaying the work of actors Anthony Quinn and Tony Curtis. Much of the work in this gallery was done in the past ten years or so and was incredibly bold. If both of these individuals had focused on their art, they still would have become famous. Again, I was struck by how creative some people allow themselves to be. They didn't put stoppers on their creativity, allowing it to spill over into an entirely different sphere.

Between these two events, I had come to a different understanding about creativity. The first time I thought creativity was something of a 'have or have-not' situation. Either you had it (and then you had a LOT of it), or you didn't have any at all. Indeed, for many years, I was positive I fit into the 'none at all' category. I also thought it was restricted to the 'creative' arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, etc.

Today, however, I know that creativity is something that everyone has, just like the ability to run. Both are on a continuum of expression and excellence. If creativity is a straight line with going from Point A to Point Z, we all fall somewhere along that line. Mozart, Michaelangelo and Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson might have ended up at Point Z, but that was because they recognized their talent and did a lot of work to develop the skill.

I found the following insight on the web at www.creativityatwork.com :

"Beliefs that only special, talented people are creative-and you have to be born that way- diminish our confidence in our creative abilities. The notion that geniuses such as Shakespeare, Picasso and Mozart were `gifted' is a myth, according to a recent study at Exeter University. Researchers examined outstanding performances in the arts, mathematics and sports, to find out if the widespread belief that to reach high levels of ability a person must possess an innate potential called talent."

"The study concludes that excellence is determined by:

"Few showed early signs of promise prior to parental encouragement. No one reached high levels of achievement in their field without devoting thousands of hours of serious training. Mozart trained for 16 years before he produced an acknowledged master work. Moreover many high performers achieve levels of excellence today that match the capabilities of a Mozart, or a Gold Medallist from the turn of the century. (The Vancouver Sun, Sept.12/98)"

The report goes on to say that "Behavior is generative; like the surface of a fast flowing river, it is inherently and continuously novel... behavior flows and it never stops changing. Novel behavior is generated continuously, but it is labeled creative only when it has some special value to the community... Generativity is the basic process that drives all the behavior we come to label creative." R.Epstein Ph.D.

According to Webster's Dictionary, creativity is "marked by the ability or power to create-to bring into existence, to invest with a new form, to produce through imaginative skill, to make or bring into existence something new." So, where do you allow your creativity and excellence to come through? Where do you find yourself saying "Let's try to put this with that and see what happens"? What activities bring you joy? What activities make you feel connected to lots of other pieces of yourself and others? What activities bring you a strong sense of accomplishment and achievement? These are most likely the areas where we express our creativity.

It is vital that each one of us recognize that spark, nurture it and let it grow. You are creative, you just might not have figured out where yet. Honor your creativity. It is a critical component in achieving the life of your dreams.
