Keep It Simple

How to Compact Your Outlook Express Folders

This issue's Keep it Simple is for Outlook Express users, although the message for anyone who uses software of any kind is "Don't Assume!".

I have used Outlook Express for years and have always chosen the setting to "Compact Messages in the Background". I always thought it odd that if I tried to do it manually, it told me there was 0% wasted space when my mailbox was almost 500mb in size. I thought it even odder when, after losing my hard drive twice in a month and deciding that it was time to find an alternate filing system that the size of my Outlook Express mailbox did not decrease. So I did some research and find out that the setting under options is for Newsgroups only!!

If you use Outlook Express, you'll find the following two links very useful, especially if you work your business out of it and save everything! The first is for a tiny program that extracts individual messages from each folder (which you can't do with OEX) and allows you to save them as separate .eml files (outside of OEX). The second is the source for the directions on how to compact your OEX Mailbox and is a goldmine of info on Outlook Express.

Directions to Compact Your OE Folders

Like most database programs, OE does not actually remove an item from a *.dbx file when you delete a message. Instead it merely tags the item for removal at a later time, mainly when you next compact your folders. Until then, the deleted message is till occupying disk space, which can cause OE to perform more slowly when accessing the *.dbx file.

To recover disk space and keep your files as small as possible, you need to compact your folders regularly. In the OE Folder list (View| Layout| Folder List), click Outlook Express so that no mail or news folder is open. Now click File| Work Offline so that no new messages will be arriving. Finally, click File| Folder| Compact All Folders. This process can take several minutes and you should not attempt to use your computer until it is finished. If an error occurs, such as "cannot compact, folder in use", just close OE, wait a second or two, then re-open OE and begin the process again. This will compact not only your news folders, but also all of your mail folders and the all-important Folders.dbx.

To compact only news folders, click Tools| Options| Maintenance| Clean up Now, then click Compact. To compact a single mail folder, just click once on the folder to select it, then click File| Folder| Compact. To compact a single newsgroup folder, right-click on the newsgroup, then click Properties| Local File| Compact.

Ten Compelling Visions To 'Want For' Yourself or Others

We all know what it's like to want for things, both tangible and intangible. It is often the first step in moving from where we are to where we want to be. Wanting 'for' someone else, however, is a powerful concept, both for you and the other person.

'Wanting for' another person transcends the everyday experience and touches the soul of both individuals, evoking our inner wisdom and connection to the Universe. If we are doing the 'wanting', it lifts us up out of ourselves and comes from that cleanest, purest part of ourselves. If we are being 'wanted for', it can make us feel cared for, heard, loved. Both are potent feelings.

Here are 10 extremely powerful "want fors". If you want them for others, remember to add their name after the 'you' in each statement. Also bear in mind that they are a gift from you to them. You receive delight in the pure giving, not in how it is received. The other person is at liberty to accept, decline, or ignore it.

Even though I may not know you all individually, you were the inspiration for this list. So, gentle Readers, I just want to say thank you and let you know what I 'want for' you:

  1. What I want for you is to experience the true richness of life

  2. What I want for you is to savor each and every moment of your day

  3. What I want for you is to be treasured by your spouse/significant other, children, parents, siblings and friends

  4. What I want for you is to be respected and held in high esteem by your neighbors, coworkers and community.

  5. What I want for you is to wake up each morning, joyous at the prospect of the day before you.

  6. What I want for you is to live in an environment filled with beauty, grace and order.

  7. What I want for you is to look forward to all of life's challenges with excitement because you recognize that this is how you stretch, grow and become 'the best' that you can be.

  8. What I want for you is to know what's really important to you - your core values -- and to base all your decisions and actions around them.

  9. What I want for you is to live life in integrity with who you are and to fully express all 'parts' of yourself.

  10. What I want for you is to 'get' that if you can't do it, you can't dream it. If 'it' ever crosses your mind, then you have the ability to create it.

The Welcome Mat Guest Column:

Is That Your Final Answer?
By Michael Angier

Regis Philbin's question from the popular game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," has become a common buzz-phrase.

So what's YOUR final answer?

When we attempt to solve problems, we oftentimes settle for less than the best solution by accepting the first answer that comes up. Our "final answer" is all too often our FIRST answer and we never find out what other answers we might have come up with.

In our rush to have the problem solved, we miss out on the elegant solutions we could have achieved. We short-change ourselves--and those affected--by taking the easy way out.

But unlike the game show, there is never just one right answer or only one solution to a problem. And the BEST answers are often hidden behind many others.

When you're brainstorming--by yourself or with others--it's possible the best idea will surface first, but the chances of that happening are even less than the Ace of Spades being the first card dealt from a deck of cards.

In fact, that's not a bad way to look at any one solution or idea--just one playing card dealt from a deck. Many more right answers are stacked behind the others. They are there if we keep looking for the next one.

Of course, there's the danger of being indecisive and becoming victim of "paralysis of analysis", but that's another issue. It's rare that you can have too many good ideas--too many good answers.

Next time you're faced with the challenge of solving a problem, think a little longer. Ask a few more questions. Dig a little deeper. Don't settle too soon.

When you make your final answer, make sure it's a good one.

It just might be a million-dollar answer.
