The 3-Minute Coach

August 13, 2001, Issue #24
Programming Guidelines

Welcome to The 3-Minute Coach

Welcome friends, old and new.

As I mentioned in the last issue, it's been a year since the first issue of The 3-Minute Coach. If you haven't stopped by the website in a while, click here and see what my clients have to say about the value I provide them. Testimonials.

Then, take the plunge and contact me for a complementary session. Send an email to: compsession04@touchpointcoaching.com . You will receive an email back, explaining more about the complementary session and what steps to take to proceed. You'll be glad you did!

Looking forward to hearing from you. Have a joy-full two weeks.

Louise

Food for Thought

"I cannot give the formula for success, but I can give you the formula of failure - which is try to please everybody." --- Herbert B. Swope

Keep It Simple

Deadheading

All you gardeners out there know that deadheading a plant simply means to remove spent blossoms. Doing so usually forces out more side shoots and more flowers. It got me thinking about how I could apply that principle to my life. What 'dead' objects could I eliminate that would stimulate creativity or fresh energy in other areas?

A few of the things that came to mind for me? A sewing project that I haven't worked on for 5 years, two books that I couldn't get past the first chapter, a number of books on topics I am no longer interested in, folders of meeting notes from old jobs, inactive client folders in 'current' drawer. With each one that I discarded or moved to a different (backup) location, I felt a swirl of energy. I'll let you know how it works

Top 10 Programming Guidelines That Apply to Life

  1. All You Need
Good basics (strong core values) and reference manuals (experience, knowledge, open-ness). Don't wait until you "know it all" to get started.

  2. Have a Vision.
Know what the end result is supposed to be. Talk to everyone you must in order to get a clear understanding of what the final product will look like. If it's your project, then create your vision first.

  3. Plan.
Write out all the steps necessary to meet the project requirements. Put them in order. Identify pre-requisites.

  4. Use the Right Tool.
Before you get started, figure out which is the best tool for what you have in mind and use that.

  5. Build & Test. Build & Test.
Validate that what you are doing is working and is moving you closer to your desired results.

  6. Communication: Before, During & After
Before, communicate to find out requirements; During: Document the code. Keep it readable so that anyone can understand what your intentions were. After: Extensive documentation and user manuals.

  7. Garbage In, Garbage Out
If your inputs (your thoughts) are garbage (negative, self-deprecatory), then your results will be garbage no matter how good the program (your action) is.

  8. Refresh and Revitalize
Sometimes you just need to go home and get a good night' sleep before it all makes sense.

  9. Collaboration
When in doubt, have another pair of eyes look at your code and your results. You don't have to do it alone. Involve family and friends in your life and in what you are trying to accomplish. Let them support you.

  10. Just Dive In.
Don't get caught up in trying to figure out what will happen if you do something. It is often easier to 'just do it' and see what happens

"The process of preparing programs for a digital computer is especially attractive, not only because it can be economically and scientifically rewarding, but also because it can be an aesthetic experience much like composing poetry or music." -- Donald E. Knuth

"If debugging is the art of removing bugs, then programming must be the art of inserting them." -- Unknown

"I am a design chauvinist. I believe that good design is magical and not to be lightly tinkered with. The difference between a great design and a lousy one is in the meshing of the thousand details that either fit or don't, and the spirit of the passionate intellect that has tied them together, or tried. That's why programming-- or buying software-- on the basis of "lists of features" is a doomed and misguided effort. The features can be thrown together, as in a garbage can, or carefully laid together and interwoven in elegant unification, as in APL, or the Forth language, or the game of chess." -- Ted Nelson

"Beware of programmers who carry screwdrivers." -- Leonard Brandwein

"It is against the grain of modern education to teach children to program. What fun is there in making plans, acquiring discipline in organizing thoughts, devoting attention to detail, and learning to be self-critical?" -- Alan Perlis
