Instructions for Life

Welcome to The 3-Minute Coach

Welcome friends, old and new.

Warmest wishes for a wonderful holiday season from our family to yours. This week's feature article is taken from a Nepalese good luck mantra and is my gift to you this holiday.

I also wanted to advise you that the next issue of The 3 Minute Coach will be out on January 8th.

Have a joy-full three weeks!

Louise

"It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not." --- James Gordon, M.D

Keep It Simple

Eliminate the Word 'Should' From Your Vocabulary

This one is so simple it's scary. Eliminating the word can simplify your life dramatically. Shoulds are almost always someone else's expectations and hopes for us. We buy into them on a conscious level, but because they're not related to who we are or what we want, they only end up causing us a lot of guilt and turmoil. Set up a little alarm to go off in your head every time you hear the word should come out of your mouth. Start noticing how often you say it and then consciously choose to eliminate the word, and the should, from your life. This will allow you to live in integrity faster than anything else I know.

Instructions for Life

This has been attributed to both a Nepalese Good Luck Mantra and to the Dalai Lama at the turn of the milennium. Whatever the source, there are some rich nuggets here.

  1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

  2. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

  3. Follow the three Rs:
    • Respect for self
    • Respect for others and
    • Responsibility for all your actions.

  4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

  5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

  6. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

  7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

  8. Spend some time alone.

  9. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.

  10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

  11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.

  12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life. Do all you can to create a tranquil, harmonious home.

  13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.

  14. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.

  15. Be gentle with the earth.

  16. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.

  17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other

  18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

  19. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.
