Any way you look at it, ‘shoulds’ are someone else’s desires or expectations for you. When you truly want to do something, the word ‘should’ never comes up. Like Nike, you just do it!
Coaching Questions
- Think of something you keep saying you “should” do, but never get around to doing.
- Can you remember where that should came from? Who or what made you feel this was a desirable action?
- Be totally honest with yourself and ask if it’s really something you want?
- If yes, then identify why you haven’t done it yet and work through the resistance.
- If no, (much more likely), what or how you’d prefer to do/be.
- Identify 3 action steps towards this goal that you can take this week. [P.S. A good suggestion for one of your action steps is to set an internal alarm to ring every time you use the word "should". You'll be surprised how often you use it!]
