30 Second Coach for 2/1/10

Watch your shoulds! Find them and give them back to whoever gave them to you in the first place!

Any way you look at it, ‘shoulds’ are someone else’s desires or expectations for you. When you truly want to do something, the word ‘should’ never comes up. Like Nike, you just do it!

Coaching Questions
  1. Think of something you keep saying you “should” do, but never get around to doing.
  2. Can you remember where that should came from? Who or what made you feel this was a desirable action?
  3. Be totally honest with yourself and ask if it’s really something you want?
  4. If yes, then identify why you haven’t done it yet and work through the resistance.
  5. If no, (much more likely), what or how you’d prefer to do/be.
  6. Identify 3 action steps towards this goal that you can take this week. [P.S. A good suggestion for one of your action steps is to set an internal alarm to ring every time you use the word "should". You'll be surprised how often you use it!]

Working on becoming your best self doesn’t mean you’re not your best self right now.

More Information

In any given moment, we are the culmination of all experiences, beliefs, relationships and life perspectives we’ve had up to the moment right before this one. So, while we work towards becoming our best self, we must remember that we’re pretty good right now!

Coaching Questions
  1. Relax and affirm that you’ve always done the very best that you could.
  2. Identify the personal qualities of your personality that you’re really proud of and list them.
  3. Identify one area of your life or your self that you’d like to improve, that you’d like to move further along the road to being your best self.
  4. Identify 3 action steps you can take in the next week to help bring that area to the next level.
  5. Do it!
