3 Ways to Relax (#2)

1. Meditate on your hands. Clench your fists with your knuckles upward as if grabbing a pencil. Now let go: the pencil drops and you have lost it. Now grasp the imaginary pencil with your knuckles face down. Release your grasp. This time the pencil remains in your hand. b>Letting go need not mean loss. An open hand means relaxation, a grasping hand represents tension and stress. As you meditate, see if you can open your mind in the same way. Pay attention to any shirts that occur. Is there a sense of release? A loosening of your grip on fixed ways of perceiving and responding to the world.

2. Iron out your creases. Even the most mundane of tasks, such as ironing, can be an exercise in calm. Imagine as your iron that the creases in your clothes are worries about life’s insolubles. As you smooth out each crease, visualize one of these worries losing its sharp edges.

3. Visualize a wind blowing straight through you, as you stand against it. As it whistles through your body, imagine it unpicking the threads of every negative thought and feeling that has ever been woven into the fabric of your being.
