Guest Wisdom: And then some!

And then some!

A retired business executive was once asked the secret of his success. He replied that it could be summed up in three words — and then some. “I discovered at an early age,” he declared, “that most of the difference between average people and top people could be explained in three words. The top people did what was expected of them — and then some. They were thoughtful of others; they were considerate and kind —and then some. They met their obligations and responsibilities fairly and squarely — and then some. They were good friends and helpful neighbors — and then some. They could be counted on in an emergency — and then some. “I am thankful for people like that, for they make the world more livable, for their spirit of service is summed up in three little words: and then some.” Carl Holmes

How often have you just met the minimal requirement? Are you willing to go above and beyond the status quo to satisfy a customer, to settle an argument, or to simply show appreciation. In the busyness of life we sometimes find ourselves skimming the surface. We take care of what is most pressing at the moment. Then we quickly move on to the next thing. In the process of meeting our goals and schedule there is a tendency to sacrifice on quality and service. Perhaps we must ask ourselves this question; Am I too busy? Should I give up some duties in order to accomplish the ones I do better? That is easier said than done, but it is a valid question?

And then some — doesn’t always take more time. Sometimes it actually saves time. How is that you ask? Sometimes the extra effort put worth can be as simple as an expression of appreciation while you are doing the work. Sometimes that little extra saves you from redoing a job later. It also gives you a more positive attitude and a joy of helping others.

Recently our company was the recipient of an -and then some- kind of service. We purchased a vehicle at a local car dealer. When we took it back for a little bit of warranty work they also washed the vehicle and changed the oil at no charge. All we expected was to get the faulty part replaced. That kind of gesture is what keeps people coming back. It shows you care. It shows an attitude of “we want to serve you.” Thank you, “Brubaker’s Auto Sales” for a job well done — and then some!
