So true, Rgail! And it's not just limited to parenting. If we were more conscious of the impact of our responses in ALL our interactions, how different would our lives be!

I've seen this on televison and it left me with a great feeling. It's a great example of parenting - turning what could have been a punitive reaction into a positive one! Don't we all wish our parents had reacted like this mom when we had our little accidents or did not always act "perfectly"? I think if my parents had learned to "lighten up" more in the face of these little incidents and had not been so quick with punishment, whether verbal or physical, it would have averted quite a bit of grief for all, and, as you noted, possibly years of analysis. But I think society has learned quite a bit about how to raise kids since then, although, hopefully, more parents have come to (or will) try to use this approach in these types of situations.
